Fun for the Family

Define family fun in Cornwall and most people will grab the kids, bucket & spades and head to one of our many splendid beaches that Cornwall has in abundance….But just in case you are feeling “beached out”, or have seen all the beautiful gardens Cornwall has to offer, and you now want to keep the little members of your family happy on holiday, Cornwall can offer some cracking alternative days out!

Here are a few tried & tested places by our family that we would like to recommend, that not everybody will know about and are well worth doing!

Paradise Park

Just a 10 minute drive from St.Ives, situated in Hayle, Paradise Park has proved a huge hit with our family and friends down the years! A small animal park, renowned for its great bird flying shows, animal feeding sessions, a mini train fun ride around the park and a good outdoor children play area, the park is also complemented by the recent addition of the “indoor jungle barn” play zone, so no excuse not to go even on a wet day! Excellent parking and a choice of two cafe”s, the kids will love it!!

Lappa Valley

A hidden gem for the little ones… about 45 minutes drive from St.ives this is definitely a fun place for young children. Set in a lovely hidden valley, you hop on a miniature steam train for a pretty ride up to Lappa where plenty of activities for children, one of our favourite being kayaking on the lake, await! Plenty of parking and refreshments available although we often take along a packed lunch! A couple of hours is probably enough time, so why not then drive further on to The Camel Valley Vineyard (www.camelvalley.com) to sample award winning wines or even take a tour of the vineyard (Book in advance). You can then come back via Padstow and drop into Rick steins fabulous Fish & Chip cafe on the south quay to round off your day! (www.rickstein.com )

Retallack Resort

Retallack is THE place in Cornwall for watersports, based just outside Newquay (a 45 minute drive away from St Ives). They have a huge ‘total wipeout’ style Aqua Park, Water Zorbs, SUP’s, Cornwall’s only FlowRider and a Wake Park!

The huge inflatable Aqua Park has a giant trampoline, catapult, water wheel, ‘stepping stones’ climbing wall, slides, blast bags, challenging balance beams and lots more – more ‘total wipeout’ style fun than you could dream of.

Geevor Tin Mine

One of the largest preserved mine sites in the UK; Geevor Mine is fascinating and set in a spectacular location near Pendeen, around a 30 minute drive from St.Ives. Perfect for all the family, particularly on a wet day, you can go on the underground tour and visit their comprehensive museum! Refreshments, and great Pasties are available. Please check website for precise details as it is slightly off the beaten track!

Flambards

Ok, last but not least…Flambards!! Definitely for kids and a sacrifice you will have to make! If you have run out of things to do and have dragged your kids around gardens galore, this is payback time!!

Flambards has every scary theme park ride imaginable, but don’t expect Alton Towers…a little more sedate and less crowded! Suitable for all ages, and for those who are not tall enough for some rides, the little ones are still well catered for!

It also has a good World War 2 museum. Plenty of parking/refreshments and on the way home why not drop into the new Sainsbury’s bang next door!!
