Where to Eat in St Ives – Part One: Our Favourite New Openings

Food and St Ives; there has never been a better pair! Our coastal town is full to the brim with a colourful mix of restaurants that serve culinary delights typical of Cornwall as well as tastes from around the world. We are constantly attracting new chefs to our vibrant town, who each bring with them a different flavour for us to enjoy.

As the first of a two-post series that celebrates the lively food scene here in St Ives, we wanted to showcase two new local restaurants. If you’re taking a break in one of our luxury cottage holiday homes, you might want to drop by and sample the delights on offer for yourself!

Gilmores Mexican Restaurant

Gilmore’s bursts on to the St Ives food scene in an explosion of fiery flavour and Mexican spice. The reviews already rolling in on its Facebook page only reiterate our opinion here at Cherished Cottages – it’s amazing!

As you’d probably expect, the menu offers up Mexican delights such as burritos, nachos and tacos, all crafted to perfection. They’re also more than happy to see you early in the morning for breakfast where you can pick from tasty treats such as breakfast burritos, Mexican eggs and avocado & eggs on toast. You’re spoilt for choice!

In terms of drinks, you could go for the fun of a smoothie or milkshake (great for kids and adults too), stick to soft drinks or make things a bit more exciting by turning to their alcohol. On offer are a selection of beers, wines, spirits – including tequila, of course – and cocktails.

The food and drinks are only enhanced by the great décor of this modern eatery. Thick wooden tables, beautiful black plates and an abundance of plants and comfy cushions give Gilmore’s a modern yet laid-back vibe. We definitely recommend a visit!

For something a bit more traditionally English, head to the newly opened Beer & Bird, bringing a fresh and new taste to a traditional menu. Located on Fore St, this family run business sources local produce and fine craft beers, taking their time so you only get the best. Nice of them, isn’t it?

Their main dish is fried chicken, which compliments their range of great beers and ciders perfectly. Their ‘Buckets of Bird’ (fried chicken in little metal buckets with a side of crispy fries) are enough to get us hungry just thinking about them! They also offer a selection of burgers, as well as great vegetarian options including their ‘Birdless burger’ – consisting mainly of a giant Portobello mushroom – their ‘Beer and Bird salad’ and a tasty mac n’ cheese. Delicious!

Their meat is sourced ethically and locally, finding free-range farms where the birds are given a wonderful, free life. We wouldn’t want anything less.

There are also delicious desserts on offer and tasty sides to tempt you. In terms of drinks, you won’t be disappointed with the selection of beer. As well as ever-changing kegs, they have a beer menu that’s twelve pages long. We know – that’s amazing! They specialise in craft beers but also serve specially selected cider, wine, a huge collection of spirits alongside non-alcoholic soft and hot drinks. Get down there as fast as you can!

If you’re staying in one of our beautiful homes at Cherished Cottages, we want to help you have the best holiday you can. If you want any more recommendations or help, just ask! We don’t bite!
