Red Sails, Downalong, St Ives
Red Sails Cottage is in the popular area of Downalong in St Ives. A Grade II listed traditional fisherman’s cottage only metres from St Ives Harbour and beach.
Originally a pilchard packing cottage, Red Sails offers a contemporary, minimalist accommodation with a lovely light feel throughout. Filled with charming retro furniture and luxurious soft furnishings, Red Sails is centrally positioned for all the shops, bars and restaurants in St Ives. The cottage really is a perfect location to explore the St Ives area and beyond.
With additional features of a quirky spiral staircase and sea views from the second bedroom; the cottage is double-fronted with the benefit of a small outside seating area. Ideal to watch the world go by!

Red Sails is a perfect cottage for a small family/2 couples.
The location is spot on; close to the harbour, Porthmeor and Porthwidden beaches and the main shops, bars and restaurants but quiet, on a pedestrianised street. The cottage was immaculate on arrival and very well equipped. We will definitely return. A 5* property.

Introduction
Red Sails is a beautiful former fisherman’s cottage located in the popular Downalong area
We aim to meet the needs of all of our guests; however the cottage is unsuitable for wheelchair users as there are narrow pathways down to the cottage and a narrow spiral staircase in the property. Guests with limited mobility are advised to continue reading the access statements for more information on each cottage, and call the Cherished office if you need any further details.
Red Sails is located on a pedestrian pathway which slopes down to the Harbour (around 30 metres with six steps) and from here there is moderately level access to the shops, restaurants and beaches.
The open plan hallway, kitchen and dining areas are located on the ground floor. A narrow spiral staircase takes you up to the first floor where there is an open plan lounge with family shower room off to the right and an additional snug room with second TV to the left of the room. This room can also be used as a single bedroom. Up to the second floor and you will find a double bedroom on the left at the top of the stairs and a king size bedroom with a WC to the right.
One small/medium dog accepted. But please restrict it to the lounge and kitchen areas. Sorry, no puppies or cats.
Pre-arrival
- Should you require a Tesco food delivery, or for a satellite navigation system, the postcode of ‘Red Sails, 16 Victoria Place’ is TR26 1NZ. Please note: for a Tesco delivery, you must ensure it is booked to be delivered after 5pm when you are there to receive it.
- Red Sails is located off Back Road East down a slightly narrow road, with access by car. We recommend you unload your car outside the Art House Gallery/Olives Café and walk down the path to Red Sails, 16 Victoria Place.
- The nearest beach is a short stroll down to the Harbour and Bamaluz, Porthgwidden and Porthmeor are located between 200 and 400 metres away.
- The nearest shop is around 30 metres away.
- The nearest large supermarket (Tesco) is located 1 mile away.
- The bus and train stations are located 0.5 miles away, plenty of taxis are available from both stations.
- The cottage has gas central heating; guests are able to control the timing of this.
- The duvets and pillows are manmade non-allergenic with quality bed linen and towels.
- All beds have mattress and pillow protectors.
- The cottage is strictly non-smoking.
- There are mains smoke detectors and a fire procedure in place.
Arrival and car parking facilities
- Keys are located in the key safe at the cottage; full details and the safe code are provided prior to your holiday.
- Please be advised that arrival time is strictly 5pm onwards.
- You can unload 10 metres from the cottage before parking.
- On arrival there will be a welcome hamper including Cornish provisions, tea bags, milk and fresh flowers, however, we recommend that you shop at one of the superstores on your way into St Ives either Lidl, M&S (Hayle) or Tesco (Carbis Bay).
- We have a comprehensive information folder and plenty of leaflets on local attractions.
Entrance & other information
- Red Sails is accessed through a latched gate and via a short paved path.
- A small lipped step takes you up onto a slate step, with a small step down onto the entrance floor mat onto a slate floor.
- The cottage is heated by adjustable central heating.
Ground Floor
- The front door opens into the spacious hallway/kitchen/dining area. The flooring is made up of slate tiles. The area has two sash windows with wooden shutters.
- The hallway has a large contemporary radiator, two large wooden chairs and a side table, ideal for taking your shoes off, and having a cuppa.
- There is a wooden dining room table suitable for five guests.
- The kitchen has an electric hob with a built in oven and cooker hood, a fully integrated dishwasher, an integrated fridge and freezer compartment and a microwave oven.
- Red Sails has plenty of crockery, cutlery and glasses for six guests for all occasions and we will provide you with tea towels, an oven glove, enough bin liners, dishwasher and clothes washing tablets to get you started.
- The kitchen top is 89cm high and has built in units with cream tiles. The room has a smoke alarm.
- There are two cupboards in the living/dining area, one with the boiler and washer dryer enclosed and the other which contains the garden furniture for use on the courtyard area, plus a hanging space for wetsuits and further space for coats and shoes.
- The first floor is accessible from the entrance hall by a narrow open tread wooden spiral staircase with 11 stairs.
First Floor
- The spiral staircase takes you up to the lounge which includes TV with a DVD player, and a shelf with books. Contemporary radiator, 2 wall lantern lights, plus one free standing floor lamp (ideal for reading) and full length curtains. The lounge has a view of the garden area within Victoria Place.
- The family shower room leads off the lounge to the right. Please note on entering the door frame is low (approx. 5’ 6”). There is a large fully tiled shower with one step up into it.
- To the left of the living space, there is one step down to an emergency exit door with eight steps leading onto Victoria Place.
- There is a snug/cabin bedroom just off the lounge which is ideal for use as a reading room and/or available to use as a single bedroom. There is a built-in bed with mattress width 2’ 6”. A Roman blind covers the window, and there are two fisherman’s wall lights in this room.
- Care should be taken round the emergency exit area due to the step down to the door.
- There are ten wooden stairs with bannisters up to the second floor which will lead you to a small, well-lit landing where you will have access to both bedrooms.
Second Floor
- At the top of the landing on your right there is a king size bedroom which has built in shelving and a hanging rail for your belongings. The room is well lit by two ceiling hanging lights and two bedside table lamps. There is a small window on the farthest bedroom wall from the entrance which has full length curtains for your privacy. On the same side as the entrance door to the bedroom is a small WC (please be aware the door frame to the WC is low – approx. 5’ 8”). The WC includes a toilet, a basin and a heated rail.
- The double bedroom on the other side of the landing again has built in storage, two bedside tables with lamps, ceiling lights and another window with full length curtains. The Harbour can be seen when standing at this window.
- At the top of the stairs, within a cupboard, there is a natural ventilation system to ensure the cottage stays well-aired and dry.
Outside
- Red Sails has a very small paved area to the front of the property with well-maintained planted pots and seating and dining for two.
- There is an outside tap – perfect for rinsing feet and beachwear before bringing into the house.
- The bin for the cottage is just outside the gate. The gate opens outwards towards the path.
Departure
- Check-out is strictly by 10am.
- On departure, keys are to be left in the key safe.
- Please leave the cottage clean and tidy; any unreasonable additional cleaning required may be charged for.
