The renowned Tate St Ives has once again opened its doors to the public after an 18 month refurbishment, bringing a buzz to the seaside town. After much anticipation, we’re excited to see what’s been going on inside the building and what we can expect in the future from the prestigious gallery.
Tate St Ives
The gallery initially opened in 1993, being one of four Tate galleries located across the UK. As a hub of art and innovation, it’s no surprise the organisers wanted to extend their reach to Cornwall and the gallery has done tremendously well in its time here both amongst tourists and locals. Located on Porthmeor beach, the gallery is enhanced by ocean views and the natural light that washes over its white walls – it’s a must-visit for any lovers of culture and art!
Initially, the refurbishment was planned for only 6 months, though it had to be extended when problems with the building were encountered – much to the disappointment of the locals! Though now it’s back, it was well worth the wait. The morning of the opening saw queues at the door and a buzz was tangible in the air around St Ives.
The project has cost close to £20 million to complete, most of which we imagine went towards the 500 sq metre extension built into the rocks behind the Tate, which is set to open in the autumn.
Currently on display are two exhibitions. ‘That Continuous Thing: Artists and the Ceramics Studio, 1920-Today’ delves into 100 years of studio pottery, showcasing more than 50 artists from around the globe with over 80 pieces on display. The second exhibition from Jessica Warboys is heavily influenced by the coast and sea, with some of the art on display having been created right here on the beaches of St Ives! We can’t think of an exhibition more fitting for the re-opening of the gallery. She uses many different mediums in this work, including large scale paintings, films and sculptures. Both exhibitions will run until 3rd September, giving you plenty of time to pop down, no matter where you’re from!
