What began as a little bit of fun for locals has quickly turned into something that attracts people from across the whole of the UK, and is one of the countries most anticipated New Year’s Eve celebrations. Yes, we’re talking about New Years in St Ives! Every year, 1,000’s of people flock to the seaside town in Cornwall to welcome in the New Year in style. There’s just one rule; make sure you’re wearing your wackiest, most impressive fancy dress costume, and you’ll be guaranteed a warm welcome from the New Year’s veterans!
What’s the Big Deal?
So, why is St Ives so great for New Years? Well, of course, there’s the fancy dress. With 1,000’s of people all dressed to the nines in colourful creations, it certainly brightens up the night and brings something a bit different to the celebrations. You haven’t really seen New Year’s Eve until you see 1,000’s of men, women and children all in fancy dress in a little seaside town! The fancy dress aspect is great for both adults and youngsters, and picking out your costumes and getting dressed up is a great family activity. There’s also the incredible fireworks display at the stroke of midnight, which many people watch from the beach. The streets are closed off for the night, and St Ives is basically transformed into one massive street party! Bars and restaurants open their doors to welcome in those looking for a drink and take the party atmosphere in doors, allowing you to enjoy a more adult take on the night if you’re without little ones. If you have children, there are many family friendly bars and restaurants that will suit you just fine too, allowing a welcome break from the cold and for your kids to rest their legs for a while if they’re feeling a little tired – it’s a pretty late night for them, after all! Expect live bands, food stalls, and a whole lot of fun!
Although roads close at 6pm so this is when most people begin to head out, the celebrations don’t have a specific start time, so it’s up to you! Whether you want to head out in the daylight to allow your costume to be seen at its full potential, or save yourself for the night, it’s for you to decide! The main area for the fireworks and general activities is the Harbour Front, which is a good spot for families and children. But really, wherever you go in the town you’ll be sure to find something to do!
New Years in St Ives is your go-to for family fun and celebrations that won’t let you down! Year upon year, the town pulls out all the stops to make sure everyone welcomes in the new year in the best way possible, so if you’re looking for a new destination to head to on the 31st, we’ve got you sorted!
